How NOT to Pack a Kayak

We'll be heading to the West Coast this summer and that trip will have us paddling with others that will be in kayaks. Since there is no drinking water available where we are going, we'll have to bring our own fresh water (5 days x 6 people x 3L/day = 90L of H2O!). When we go to pack our canoe and the two kayaks we'll have to keep this little video in mind. Does this paddler look ready to take on the swell of the open Pacific Ocean to you?

  1. what a moron!

A buddy who recently did the Baja said they took 30L each in a water bladder that they placed inside the cockpit between their legs.

.....not highcentered on the deck =0)

  2. 6.5 gallons in the cockpit? That's pretty good. With a flexible bladder it would take the lowest possible aspect in the boat and would actually stabilize the kayak instead of the effect seen in the video. You want that kind of weight (66 lbs) very low and very immobile. They say even an inch higher of a seat will destabilize a kayak, so imagine that kind of weight up on the deck & sloshing back and forth!

  3. I'm not so sure that the person in the clip should be allowed on the water. Doesn't seem too safe to me.....

  5. Just to say hi.....came across your blog whilst randomly clicking 'next blog'. We're off to Vancouver Island this summer too, and will be sailing out of Comox, probably across to Desolation Sound. Happy paddling.
